Our group of volunteers has been taking care of the Vasil’kovsky orphanage for many years already. Teenagers are directed here from orphanages and boarding institutions all across the Kiev region.
Bringing up orphans, especially of such critical age cohort, has always been and still stays a very challenging task. The teenagers are difficult and there must be a personal approach found to each of them.
Some boarders may be in an especially difficult situation perpetuated by the negative experiences connected to alcohol and drug abuse. Among the boarders there are many, who to a certain extent could be considered “hopeless” and lacking future prospects.
How to bring up these boys and girls who possess negative life experiences of various degrees? How to overcome and reduce the impact of the negative habits they have? How to prevent them from hanging around with street gangs again? And the most important issue – how to adapt them back to life and make them fully functioning members of society?
Several years of co-operation with the orphanage workers as well as working with its students have shown that the most important and demanded elements of volunteer work are watching meaningful contemporary video films as well as making interesting educational trips. For excursions we chose museums, expositions as well as holy places and search for passionate guides able to inspire students.
Among the most memorable latest visits are the visits to the Mobile Troops Museum, Chernobyl Museum as well as to a local Observatory. Movies are watched either inside the orphanage building or on the big screen in the movie theatres. Among the latest movies watched are “The Brest Fortress” and “The Chronicles of Narnia”.
Second part of the work is the ongoing contacts with students via meetings and lectures dedicated to the discussion of the material they have watched. Often we organize contests and games based on the material extracted from visiting some interesting place or from watching some interesting movie. This helps students to become active participants rather than mere passive spectators. They are learning to formulate their thoughts and to form their own opinion.
We have long ago abandoned the practice of giving presents just like that. We try to ensure that all presents are earned by means of hard work and dedication to a certain goal on the part of students. That requires them to learn how to search for information and establish relations when working in a team.
We are not an officially established Foundation, but a group of volunteers. That is why we try to direct all financial means in our possession only towards planned activities: paying for transportation, excursions, and prizes for the contest winners. We highly value each donated hryvnya! This is exactly such outside disinterested help from all of you that enables us to do many useful and important things for these boys and girls preparing to step into the adult life! Permanent realization of our program requires financial means for trips and excursion organization, firm watching, purchase of teaching aids, acquisition of awards and prizes for the participants of various contests.
And the most important – this work is really fruitful. That is why we will be trying not to stop it despite all possible financial difficulties. Many thanks to everybody who has been helping and is still helping us! – We really need your support! Your support is very important, necessary and up-to-date! Many thanks for that!
